Sedo Sells Invest.com For $1,015,000

Hey folks have you heard?

Sedo has completed the $1,015,000 sale of Invest.com via their GreatDomains premium auction site.

What’s the big deal?

Well Invest.com’s sale is the first reported seven figure sale since the first quarter of this year.

Actually the domain was sold in December but the final payment was just recently completed and the domain just changed hands.

Who says there is no money in domains? Ask the previous owner of invest.com and those whose domains were sold at the Targeted T.R.A.F.F.I.C Conference in New York.

.MP Domains Gaining Ground With New Offer from CHI.MP

You can get your own Beta .mp domain now that chi.mp has started operations. “Content Hub and Identity Platform Management” is how chi.mp is described. It lets chi.mp owners to select their own second level domains. It enables them to make their own content, communications and handle their identity on line. Over 400 million people can get their own .mp domains for active one social network at no cost.

People who wish to register these domains outside of the chi.mp network can get a .mp domain for $20. Those who own trademarks can avoid infringement by securing the trademarks in the .mp extension. Through November 7 2008 is when the sunrise challenge period ends after that the WPO’s Uniform Dispute Resolution Process will have jurisdiction.

“We’re excited to release the chi.mp private beta, by freeing the Internet for people to own their online identities, content, contacts and communications, we anticipate tens of millions of people taking control over their digital lives on their own .mp domain.” chi.mp Chief Strategy Officer Tony Haile said.

New Top Level Internet Domains May Create Problems For WIPO

The process of serving new Top Level Domains (TLD) is being closely watched by WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) In case you a total newbie, TLD’s are extensions like .com, .net etc.. They are at the end of a website address. Conflicts with trademarks could be the result of some TLD’s as they could be in other languages than English.

The problem comes in as domain names like .asia are introduced. It is a free for all when open domain names are introduced to the public. They are not restricted as .aero where only businesses with connections to the airlines can register. Any business can register any names they want. And this seem to have WIPO worried.

Since 1999 the WIPO’s Arbitration and Mediation Center has dealt with domain name disputes for over 13.500 names. There was an 18% rise in 2007 from 96 countries and a total of 2156 domains. This is not the end of the problem; the WIPO also arbitrates 54 of country codes (ccTLD). The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) hears legal cases under its Uniform Domain Name Disputes Policy (UDRP). WIPO recommends these cases to them.

Sunrise procedures like trademark owners reserving keywords associated with their businesses are the remedy seen by WIPO to solve this problem. They would like new domains to have a pioneer application period before their debut.

Disputes are going to multiply when domain names go global and names like .cola and .britain are introduced. ICANN and WIPO will be busier than they are now, resolving all the disputes that evolve.
