Heard this gist yet?  Frank Schilling, one of the most popular names in the domain industry lost his domain chillibeans.com to an eyewear firm in Brazil who has a trademark on Chilli Beans.
http://www.domainbits.com/frank-schilling-loses-udrp/

There have been different opinions on this decision, since most people believe CHILLI BEANS is a generic term. Turns out the actual spelling of the generic term is CHILI with one L. But isn’t CHILI spelt CHILLI in certain laces in the world, like DOLLAR is DOLAR in certain parts?

Is this decision a right one or a wrong one?.

ICANN has plans to from sometime next year give people rights to choose their own suffices or extensions, .books, .food, etc. Of course ICANN will first sell the rights to the highest bidder, who will then go on to offer registration in those extension for some stipulated amount, experts say, something in the $50 region per year.

The question is will this be a successful feat? I get it that so many people are complaining about not being able to have access to names of their choice as the most preferred and revered extension .com is taken in almost all keywords, products and dictionary names etc.

In my own opinion it will be pretty difficult for any of such extensions to dethrone the king of the internet, .COM, while some people are predicting the DEATH or at least the REDUCTION IN THE VALUE OR INFLUENCE of .COM, I say, wake up guys DOTCOM is here to stay.

What do you think?

The .name extension which has been a failed extension until now has been acquired by Verisign, the same company that runs major domain extensions like .com .net and .org.

Actually Verisign acquired the company that use to run the.name extension…

We are pleased to announce that VeriSign closed on an agreement to acquire Global Name Registry, Ltd., which includes management of the .name top level domain on October 1, 2008. We believe the addition of .name is a natural fit, as we have run the technical backend in support of .name for more than five years.

What does this mean for existing registrars?

Your interface to VeriSign for .name domain names will continue to operate as it has in the past with no changes.

We are currently assessing enhancements to the service offering that meet the needs of the registrar channel in servicing the consumer market. Please look for service notices in the coming weeks that will outline those changes and the steps you need to take advantage of those features.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Customer Service at info@verisign-grs.com.

Very truly yours,

Question: Will the .name extension now get a better platform? Will it become successful this time around?
